In 2007, Chiku Awali embarked upon an initiative with the Rockland County Department of Health, Eat Well Play Hard program to encourage a healthier lifestyle. Chiku Awali has sustained this effort by encouraging its participants to Eat Well and Live Well. Each participant who enrolls in our dance or drumming program is reminded to Move More, Eat Vegetables and Fruits and be Tobacco Free. Each child that enrolls in the program is asked to take an Eat Well Play Hard pledge challenging him/her to choose low or no fat dairy products, watch no more than one hour of TV per day, move more and add two vegetables and or fruits to his/her meals.
Through grants from the Eat Well Play Hard program, the Chiku Awali dance and drumming students and the Village of Spring Valley Youth Bureau after school program students make themselves a healthy snack under the supervision of Ms. Vallerie Cleveland, Board Member of Chiku Awali.
The children have made fruit kabobs, banana rolls, mini pizzas and chicken nuggets from the Color Me Healthy monthly newsletter. If you would like a copy of the recipe for any one of the snacks, please send an email to:
