Chiku Awali African Dance, Arts & Cultural––African Dance Extravaganza is still scheduled for November 19, 2011.
It has been a difficult time for Chiku Awali African Dance Extravaganza this year. The artistic director, Jerry Kwashie Dzokoto, will not be in the United States to pull off his famous dance drama. And due to the recent hurricane, the Ramapo Cultural Arts Theater where the show was to be held is closed for repair due to the hurricane damage. But, as they say, the show must go on. Thanks to the efforts of the staff at Rockland Community College, Extravaganza is able to keep the same date and time for its production.
Community members and the Youth Ensemble will pay homage to Mr. Dzokoto by performing excerpts from his unfinished dance drama, the Untold Mystery of Africa. The sound of drums and the energy of dance will come alive under the direction of Ms. Benita Roxbury, Mr. Morgan Greenstreet, and Ms. Charlese Randolph. On Saturday, November 19, at 2:00p.m., the 9th Annual Chiku Awali Experience--African Dance Extravaganza will be showcased./x-tad-smaller>/x-tad-smaller> Extravaganza will feature Chiku Awali dancers in new pieces such Inkumbi as well as some trusted and traditional numbers like Lamban.
